To mark the 150th anniversary of the FA Cup, the world’s most iconic club football competition, Mitre released a limited edition football.
Only 150 of these specially designed balls exist and went on sale for £150 each.
But what makes this ball unique, however, is that it is signed by Ronnie Radford – scorer of the greatest goal ever scored in the competition.
Playing for non-league Hereford Utd in February 1972, against the mighty first division Newcastle Utd, Ronnie scored a 40 yard wonder goal from out of the mud. His strike brought the sides level and Hereford went on to win the game, ensuring that Ronnie’s strike has gone down in FA Cup folklore as one of the competition’s greatest moments.
TV commentary on Match of the Day was from a young John Motson, who credits the goal as launching his TV punditry career.
“Oh what a goal! Radford the scorer. Ronnie Radford! And the crowd are on the pitch. What a tremendous shot by Ronnie Radford”
John Motson, Match of the Day, 5 February 1972
The Ronnie Radford trophy is now awarded every year ahead of the final, to that season’s giant-killing side and Ronnie has kindly signed this limited edition ball especially for the Prevent Breast Cancer charity.
There’s only one FA Cup, there’s only one Ronnie Radford and there’s only one of these footballs!
